WAX AND WILDFLOWERS

"Dear Della," 10 x 10 inches, encaustic collage with embedded flower petals and daffodils

by Melissa Stephens.

The International Encaustic Artists annual juried exhibition is being hosted by the San Antonio Art League and Museum June 11 - August 11, 2023.

The theme of the all-encaustic exhibit is Wax and Wildflowers, a tribute to the fabled Davis Wildflower Competition of 1929 when wealthy oilman Edgar B. Davis asked the Art League to put out a call to artists all over the world to paint Texas wildflowers.

Almost a century later, the call for Wax and Wildflowers invited national, international, and regional encaustic artists to interpret this same theme of wildflowers using the medium of encaustic wax.

Artists interpreted the theme using wax in any way they wanted - as a call for sustainable plantings, as a metaphor for uncultivated nature, as an abstract concept, as ecoprints with wax, or any other creative variation on the wildflower theme. 50 pieces from 38 artists were selected for the exhibition.
